The early butterfly gets the verbena
The early butterfly gets the verbena

Swallowtails were early at The Garden Guy’s house this year. Thank goodness I had Superbena verbenas in full bloom. It is as if they had been given the task of announcing the arrival of spring and the butterfly season. March 22, I photographed an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on Superbana Royale Chambray verbena.

Baseball splits pair of games

The Tigers baseball team continues to have problems with getting out of the first inning without giving up runs. Some they come back from and some they don't. The past two games were some of that as DS split the two games with Canyon (2-9) and Boerne Champion (6-5) in eight.

Lacrosse drops final regular season game

Drip Lacrosse wrapped up their regular season against Austin High on Thursday night at Chalmer’s Field. With the Austin skyline in the background and fans sitting in truck beds around the field, the Tigers jumped out to 2-0 lead on goals from Brett Williamson and Brendan Linan. The Maroons found the back of the net late in the 1st period to close the gap to 2-1. The 2nd quarter belonged to Austin High as they had 7 more goals while limiting the Tigers to only 4 shots on goal. Williamson picked up his 2nd and 3rd goal of the game and the Tigers trailed 8-4 at the half.

Softball readies for play-off push

Last Saturday the Lady Tigers scheduled a couple of games with two good teams to better sharpen the team for the coming playoffs. This doubleheader was played at the Lady Tigers field. The two teams were Boerne and Georgetown, two teams heading for the playoffs as well. DS would lose both as Boerne came back to win 6-4 and Georgetown started fast to win 10-6. We will probably see the Lady Eagles in the playoffs. Boerne is Class 4A. A Monday district game with Veterans Memorial produced an 8-3 win. The game was played on Monday to free up athletes for the district track meet on Tuesday.

District 26-5A track meet results

Weather has presented uncomfortable playing conditions for most of the spring sports. For the District track meet held at New Braunfels Canyon, it was mostly windy days although other threatening weather did not materialize. As expected Boerne Champion could not be brought down while DS was doing their best to hang in there and give them a race. As has been the case for years, a weak showing in the field events just puts the Tigers too far behind to overcome the total points. BC won both varsity divisions and the JVG division while the Tigers trailed for second place and the Lady Tigers were fourth. Both Lady Tigers 1600 runners broke the previous school record and Brant Melton sparked the boys with gold efforts in the 800, 1600 and 3200 races and the 800 relay took the other gold with a near school record.
