New records set at state swim meet
New records set at state swim meet

The waters got a little rougher at the state level for the Dripping Springs swim team held at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Members of the team were entered in nine events. Anna Hoskovec lowered her 500 free record in the prelims with a time of 5.05.14. The girls 200 Free Relay team lowered their own school record twice in the meet and the same members of the 400 Free Relay won bronze. At the end of the day the Lady Tigers were ninth in state and the Tigers were 36th. This was the third time in school history that the girls team has placed in the top ten.

The Tigers opened their 2022 campaign Wednesday night against Smithson Valley. Junior Walker Wright carried the hammer into the season and donned the #16 in honor of former teammate, Taden Frickel. Each game this season, a player will earn the right to wear number 16 and attempt to bring the passion, energy and intensity that Taden brought to every game.

Both of the Dripping Springs soccer teams are dominating the opposition and most likely will not get tested until deep in the playoffs. The Lady Tigers are #1 in the state and undefeated for the season while the Tigers are close behind with a #9 ranking and a 10-game winning streak.

Tigers basketball wins two in a row
Tigers basketball wins two in a row

As the season winds down for the varsity Tigers it is a case of “too little, too late”. They got too far behind to have time to catch up. DS has played much better of late but they find themselves trailing fourth place by three games and only two left. You can do the math. They are 11-7 on the season and 7-7 in district. Left are games with Hays Johnson and NB Canyon and will be completed by the next edition.

Lady Tigers finish long season
Lady Tigers finish long season

The season has not been kind to the Lady Tigers basketball team as they could not improve their firepower. They would finish the season with a 9-26 record and 4-12 in district. As we have mentioned before they had at least a half dozen games theirs to win. Despite giving the effort, it just did not culminate in consistent play for a complete game. With the move up to 6A next year, it is obvious the Lady Tigers will have to be willing to take a monumental step up in skill development to have the season they will need to compete. Basketball is one of those sports that you do not have to spend a fortune on to become good. Only time. Get your hands on a ball, find a gym, a park court or a driveway with a goal and spend hours practicing good fundamental skills in all phases of the game. Ballhandling, rebounding and accurate shooting. In the day those individuals were called “gym rats.”

Lady Tigers have an easy win
Lady Tigers have an easy win

The Lady Tigers basketball team was able to play with less pressure allowing them to have success. This was the case in the 73-21 win over Lehman. Although the Lady Lobos are experiencing a winless season, they were still providing opposition to work against. Coach Batson substituted freely and everyone was able to get quality time and practice. What was encouraging was the players worked the ball much better and were looking for the open player. The more a player practices the correct moves the better they get at it and can perform the same maneuver against better teams. Practice makes perfect. Still left to work on is quality shooting skills for higher percentage accuracy. That won't come without extra gym time doing it correctly.

Weather only thing that can slow down Lacrose

For the second year in a row, weather will delay the start of the Dripping Springs High School Boys Lacrosse season. After a couple of cancellations this past weekend, the Tigers will kick off their season this Wednesday night against Smithson Valley. The program, led by Coach Bill Cafferata in his 9th season at DSHS, returns 7 seniors and 8 juniors from a team that went 9-6, including a playoff win against Memorial.

Tigers fail to finish
Tigers fail to finish

It is pretty well accepted that to be successful one must be able to finish games. Does not make much difference how well you played before. The Tigers are struggling to do just that. At the present it has been the fateful fourth. It does not take much. In talking with Coach Swannack before the last game, he said early on they realized they would not be able to stay in high-scoring games. So their strategy would be to keep the scores low so they would be in the running when it came down to the end. They have been doing that but it is the finish that usually does them in. Their 57-43 loss to Alamo Heights and a 47-34 loss to Veterans Memorial attest to that.

Lady Tigers drop a heartbreaker
Lady Tigers drop a heartbreaker

What can you say? Your team has led the game from the very beginning by as much as twelve points late into the third and by ten starting the fourth. The lead melted away until tied at 42 with 48 seconds remaining. DS added a free throw at 25 to go ahead only to have Alamo Heights put up a long three that hit nothing but net and their first lead with ten seconds left. The Lady Tigers got an attempt off and was fouled with less than a second left. A chance to tie and go to OT. However, the second free throw bounced harmlessly off the rim and the Lady Tigers suffered a cruel 44- 45 loss.
