Tigers stopped at the start
Tigers stopped at the start

The Tigers baseball team got a double-dose of what had plagued them throughout the season when they took on the Cedar Park Timberwolves in bi-district action. All season long they have been unable to get a starting pitcher to pitch well in the first couple of innings giving up big leads early. Good teams take advantage and turn them into losses. The major cause is freebie walks making the old adage “you can figure on having a run scored against you for every walk you give up”. Comebacks are also tough when a team does not execute at bats in key situations. Cedar Park had it all as they dealt the Tigers 6-1, 9-1 losses to eliminate them from the playoffs.

Showing the strength and reputation of the Dripping Springs programs, both squads had an abundance of honors. The Tigers and Lady Tigers each had four individuals named. Coming up soon will be more honors as the Sportswriters All-State teams will be selected as well as the Austin American-Statesman paper will name their All-Centex teams.

The Tigers traveled to Kingwood for the weekend for the Texas High School Lacrosse League Super Regionals. They kicked things off against the hometown Mustangs on Saturday. Drip got things started early behind goals from Aiden Kane, Ryan Williamson and Jack Tanner before Kingwood was able to get on the board. A Williamson assist to Tanner wrapped up the 1st quarter with the Tigers leading 4-1. The offense kept up the pressure in the 2nd quarter with goals by Kane, Williamson and Brendan Linan, driving to a 7-3 lead at the half.

Tigers drop final game

The final week of the regular season copied their whole season. Putting it all together and then struggling with phases of their game. Of course, much has to do with the opponent but the Tigers do have to own their problems. They entered the week not having to worry about making the playoffs but the seed does matter. Going into the final game with Kerrville they were the second seed. A loss and a Johnson win would drop them to third. There is usually a steeper hill to climb playing a second seed than a third. Things would go their way at Seguin with two big scoring innings invoking the tenrun rule after five with the 15-0 score. However, the Antlers made it personal with a 2-1 triumph.

After competing in the regional track meet at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio, Dripping Springs will be sending two individuals to the State meet held in Austin on May 13. Ava Williamson placed second in the high jump with a leap of 5'6, tying a 20- year old school record. Brant Melton remained undefeated in the 800 to punch his ticket. Only the top two places advance and DS had three others to barely miss out with thirds.

Last year at this time, the Lady Tigers were battling the elements and a good-hitting Glenn nine. Torrential-type rains caused the series to be played over five days with DS falling short in moving on. This year it would be a night and day comparison. With practically the same lineup returning, the Lady Tigers were ready to take on Georgetown East View. No repeat as Dripping Springs opened with an 8-2 victory and closed it out with a perfect 4-0 game.

Dripping Springs is in a good position to finish strong and earn a place in the playoffs. They are holding onto third place with only two games remaining. They have been making the most of the hits they get. They got a measure of revenge defeating Alamo Heights 6-1, then took out Veterans Memorial 9-2 before outlasting Lehman 11-7. They finish district play Friday hosting Kerrville.

Both of the Dripping Springs soccer teams had stellar seasons as the Lady Tigers reached the regional finals (25-1) and the Tigers made it to the state finals (26-4). This also means they should reap most of the rewards when it comes to all-district honors and they did.

The Lady Tigers played it close to the vest as they clinched first place in district. The Lady Tigers scored four in the first to solidify their 7-0 victory over Lehman. They would also open with four in the game with Seguin. However, the Lady Matadors did not let them off the hook that easily. They would go ahead 6-5 in the third with a five-spot. The game was tied at 7-7 in the fourth and the Lady Tigers pushed across the winning run in the sixth. The final district game was with Kerrville. A 5-1 win that avenged an earlier loss. Three walks, three hits gave DS the three runs they needed in the third to support H. Anderson's complete game.
