With drought, ice storms, harsh summer heat and water restrictions, many of the Hill Country’s precious trees are suffering and dying, some infected with a deadly fungus.

The Dripping Springs ISD Board of Trustees approved the largest tax rate reduction in more than 15 years at its Sept. 25 meeting by a vote of 6-1.

With one meet to go before district, the Dripping Springs High School cross country teams entered the toughest meet of the year.

Lake Travis High School got the jump on the Dripping Springs High School Lady Tigers in their first district meeting and came away with a 3-1 advantage.

A sluggish first half that included big penalties and a couple of interceptions that saw Dripping Springs High School going into halftime with a slim 14-12 halftime lead was saved by another top notch defensive effort this past weekend.

November 3 is Arbor Day in Texas. We should make this one of the most important days on the calendar because our quality of life depends upon it. Our local trees and forests have been through several years of unusual freezes, ice storms, insect infestation (Oak Wilt), drought, and wildfires. The resulting destruction cannot be completely tallied until future research is completed. However, the results of the 2011 drought offer an indication. Statistics from the Texas A&M Forest Service and Urban Forestry show that in 2011, 301 million trees in forested plots died, and 5.6 million trees in urban areas. Moreover, since January 2023, 165,837 acres of forest have burned in Texas. This must be added to the thousands of acres cleared for construction or paved in concrete. Globally 2400 trees are cut down every minute. In 2020 alone 25.8 million hectares (a hectare is 2.47 acres) of forest were lost.

In the second major series of arrests in recent weeks in Hays County, the Kyle Police Department announced in a press release that officers had arrested five people in connection to a human smuggling case.
