Suñorita Rose Garners American Rose Society’s ‘Award of Excellence’

The Garden Guy wasn’t stopping to smell the roses but instead stared in awe at the form of a rosebud. Even though this new rose variety called Suñorita is considered a miniflora, the bud looked like a classic tiny hybrid tea. Then — out of nowhere as if to confirm my admiration — a butterfly landed on top and proceeded to investigate.

Lady Tigers split a pair

It was back to district action for the Lady Tigers basketball team. The team continues to improve their brand of play as they were involved in two close games, one a heartbreaker. They would eke out a 51-47 victory over Alamo Heights but failed to hold off a late basket in the Veteran's Memorial 47-46 loss. They are now 2-3 in district and 6-12 overall.

The second half of the basketball season will probably be an adventurous route for most teams due to Covid. The schools have been having to deal with it for most, if not all their season to date. We can expect the numbers to only go up for the next two months and cause much havoc in the schedules.

Loretta McClaferty Watson, 85, is still competing in the world of sports, something she has done all her life. She was born and raised in Dripping Springs. While attending Dripping Springs schools she participated in volleyball and softball and was a head cheerleader. Interests learned here have stayed with her.

More than 20 new state laws went into effect as Texans rang in the New Year, with another halfdozen to go on the books on Jan. 18, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Those laws include a ban on transgender athletes competing on sports teams that reflect their gender identity, and penalties for illegally restraining dogs.

San Marcos company partners in rescue mission
San Marcos company partners in rescue mission

With a new year comes a new beginning for 47 U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) recently rescued from war torn Afghanistan. It’s thanks in part to a San Marcos company — Berry Aviation — who partnered with a group of military and special operations veterans known as Project DYNAMO. The two have been working behind the scenes to help rescue those stranded since the Aug. 31 evacuation of U.S. troops.
