Lady Tigers live on the edge in district play

It will be imperative for the Dripping Springs High School Lady Tigers to win the games they are expected to win if they hope to stay in the race for a playoff berth.

It will be imperative for the Dripping Springs High School Lady Tigers to win the games they are expected to win if they hope to stay in the race for a playoff berth.

Austin High School, Westlake High School and Lake Travis High School have been given the nod to battle it out for the top three places. All others are fair game.

Bowie High School was one of DSHS’s critical games. It was one of those games where the Lady Tigers held the lead for most of the game only to fall short at the very end. The final was 43-41. Dripping Springs held a 12-6 lead after one and expanded it to 25-16 at the half. It was 32-28 after the third quarter.

Coach Jordan Batson pointed out that his team only made 5-15 free throws in the second half to hamper the effort. He said they are right at the corner but have not been able to turn it.

The game with Johnson High School was just the opposite results of the Bowie one. Johnson would lead almost the entire game, only to watch the Lady Tigers overtake them in the final seconds. Scoring was slow in the first quarter, ending 6-6. Dripping Springs only shot free throws in the second but could only make 3-11 as they trailed at the half 16-9.

The Lady Tigers picked up the pace in the second half but could not gain much ground as the quarter ended 24-21. Johnson's first three baskets were three-pointers, making it look like gaining ground was going to be difficult. But the Lady Tigers were tenacious, and Linan Scott's basket tied it at 34. Johnson dropped in a free throw to take the lead, but then, with only seconds remaining, Makynna Hubbard was fouled and calmly dropped in two free throws for a 36-35 victory.

Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Jordan Cox (8), Scott, Hayden Ely (6), Hubbard (5), Anna Rhode (4), Kiera O'Connor (2), Rain Collins (2), Brylee Russell (2) and Megan Hancock (1).
