The 76th Hays County Youth Livestock Show came and went last week, with children from eight to 18 showing their swine, cattle, goats, lambs, poultry, rabbits and horses at the event.

The Hays County Livestock Show helps educate and grow leaders of tomorrow through competitive projects which teach a variety of life skills including personal responsibility, time management, sportsmanship and hard work. The show kicked off at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park and Event Center on Saturday, Jan. 22, with a presentation of the Queen’s Court and show ambassadors. Throughout the week, 4-H and Future Farmers of America participants from across Hays County competed in a number of categories, including Ag Mechanics and Home Skills.

More than 600 children exhibited their projects with a total of 1500 entries, wrapping up on Saturday, Jan. 29. Local winners included Nathan and Millie Powers (Grand Champion Market Steer and Reserve Champion Market Steer, respectively), Peyton Hipolito (Reserve Champion Market Swine), Clayton Doyle (Grand Champion Breeding Gilt), Quincy Raines (Grand Champion Breeding Doe), Roan Aleshire (Grand Champion Market Rabbit), Chazin Herzog (Reserve Champion Breeding Rabbit) and Mac MacAlexander (Reserve Champion Ag Mechanics).

While the show is an opportunity for students to exhibit their project work, it is also a time for community members and business leaders to support them through the junior livestock auction. To increase those contributions, the show is accepting add-ons through Feb. 13.

For information on add-ons and more, visit the show’s Facebook page at facebook.com by searching for the Hays County Youth Livestock Show.
