Historical Commission open for applications

The Hays County Historical Commission is accepting applications for membership through Friday, Dec. 16. Members are appointed by the Hays County Commissioners Court.

The purpose of the Hays County Historical Commission is to promote the preservation of Hays County’s historic and cultural resources. Activities include researching historical topics, the review of Official Texas Historical Markers, continuing a program of the survey of historic resources and nominations to the National Register of Historic Places, cemetery preservation, an oral history program and promoting public awareness of the importance of local history to the future of Hays County thorough a variety of programs.

The Hays County Historical Commission operates two museums: The Courthouse Museum in the historic Hays County Courthouse in San Marcos and the Kyle Railroad Depot and Heritage Center in Kyle. Plans are underway to open a new museum in the Historic Old Hays County Jail, located in San Marcos, in the near future.

Volunteer docents are always welcome to participate in these programs, which are not limited to the members of the Hays County Historical Commission.

Applications are to be received electronically or postmarked no later than Dec. 16. The Hays County Commissioners Court appoints members for a two-year term (2023–2024). The number of appointees may be limited.
