Local songwriter Helen Darling was presented with the 2025 Women in the Arts Recognition Award at the 126th State Conference of The Daughters of the American Revolution, Texas Society.
The DAR award recognizes and honors women who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the arts. Helen has been a life-long performance artist, releasing her first self-titled professional album via the Decca record label. On this album, one of the two songs she co-wrote, 'I Haven't Found it Yet,' got immediate national attention from Billboard Magazine, noting it as an 'exceptional ballad.' Through the years, she gained notoriety for her musical abilities on the stage, in the studio, and in songwriting circles. One of her songs, 'The Angels Sang,' was recorded by Reba McEntire.
Perhaps her most well-known song is 'Bring on the Rain,' which she co-wrote with Billy Montana. It was recorded by country music superstars Jo Dee Messina and Tim McGraw. “Bring on the Rain” was released September 10, 2001 and immediately garnered national attention in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that happened one day after its release. The song soared to the top of the country charts, earning a #1 hit status. It has been featured in American prime-time television dramas, and most recently, in an October 2024 episode of The Voice.
When she isn't songwriting, Helen participates in songwriting festivals around the country where she offers audiences a chance to hear her songwriting methods, inspirations, and stories behind her songs. She is also a coach, mentor, and teacher of coursework designed to assist upand- coming songwriters.
The Sarah Pound DAR Chapter, based in Dripping Springs, was honored to nominate Helen for the award.
“We are beyond delighted that such an exceptionally talented and deserving singer and songwriter - especially one who represents the heart and soul of our community - has been chosen to receive this distinguished award,” Chapter Regent Gigi Sanchez said.
