Hometown Missions started its next Home-in-a-Month project on Saturday, Apr. 5 with demolition of the 56-year-old manufactured home of Connie and Denis McGovern.
The couple have lived in the house on Harmon Hills Road for decades, but problems with collapsing floors, out-of-date electrical systems and a leaking roof meant it was time to say goodbye.
A crew of volunteers and local contractors will be building them a brand new house on the site over the next month. The goal is to have the 2-bedroom, 1.5 bath house movein ready by the third week of May. But making that happen takes a lot of helping hands, so Hometown Missions is seeking volunteers to assist with the project.
They have a need for skilled and unskilled volunteers in April and in May. Minors should be over the age of 16 to participate in construction tasks. Other ages can be considered depending on the tasks and safety needed for that volunteer day.
“To every volunteer who has ever swung a hammer, shared a story, or simply showed up—you are the heartbeat of Hometown Missions,” said David Edwards, President, Hometown Missions Board of Directors. “Together, we’re not just building homes; we’re building a community.”
Painting tools will be provided by Hometown Missions, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own basic construction tools if they have them. Donations of money and supplies are also welcome. To sign up or get details, visit www.hometownmissions. org.
