OPINION: LETTER TO THE EDITOR

OPINION: LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, Instead of tuning in to the President’s address to Congress on March 4, the National League of Women Voters (LWVUS) along with about a dozen or so partners called for gatherings across the nation. Communities were invited to gather in solidarity for the defense of our democracy.

The Texas State League and the Austin Area, Williamson, and Hays Leagues of Women Voters quickly pulled together a gathering at the Austin state capitol. An estimated 200 people attended the “Light for Our Democracy” event. About 16 of those were from Hays County including spouses, several of whom are League members, and also children.

The San Marcos League of Women Voters was established in the early 60’s. From that League came the Hays League just about 10 years ago. In that time, we already have a history of making a difference. For example, we were very much involved in the establishment of county-wide polling and in creating a fair redistricting map in the county.

This fall, the League registered an extraordinary number of voters in events all across the county, including 65 high school students, and about 1250 on campus at Texas State. We do the Voters Guides, Vote 411, and candidate forums. We ask all of the candidates the same questions so voters have a good basis to compare and choose among those running for office.

We are nonpartisan, but we focus on issues of vital interest to the public -- education, voting rights, gun safety, water, and women’s healthcare, among other things. With the legislature in session, we stay very busy advocating and educating.

From my perspective, the “Light for Our Democracy” gathering was somewhat quiet and reflective, but served as a powerful reminder of the power of collective action. Women gained the right to vote through collective action. The civil rights movement created far-reaching change through collective action.

At this moment, when the very core of our democracy seems to be under attack, we, the American people, must remember that this is our country, our democracy. We, the people, together, have a great deal of power to create change.
