OPINION
Dear Editor, Recently Hays County constructed an emergency response building at the entrance to our subdivision, 1 Heritage Oaks. The building became operational in October 2024.
Concrete and buildings cover almost the total lot except for a section by the street. It is basically 95% percent impervious cover. The facility has two large drain pipes flowing to the street. The remaining 5% of the lot is between the facility and the street.
The county has done basically nothing to improve the rocky 5%. The area is a mess. It looks like a moonscape, and it is eroding every time it rains. It will be a big problem when it really rains hard. Where is the water going to go?
I wrote Hays County Commissioner Smith an email about this situation on December 11, 2024 and received no response. I sent a second email and I received a short response from Carol Bedrich, executive assistant, Precinct 4. She said she was waiting on a response from Smith. As of this date I have not received any meaningful response.
One of my neighbors went to the facility and she spoke to an employee there about the problem. The employee told her the county ran out of money on the project and there was nothing left for landscaping.
I think the county should do a better job of protecting the environment and our neighborhood, and fix this area before it erodes further.
