DSHS wrestlers bring home state championships

On Feb. 14-15, four Dripping Springs High School wrestlers competed at the UIL 6A State Tournament at the Berry Center in Houston. Two of those wrestlers, junior Jackson Shipley and freshman Lucy Clarno, both brought home state championships.

The wrestlers qualified for state after placing in the top four of their respective weight classes at the Region IV-6A Championship.

This was Shipley’s third trip to the state meet. He was the reigning state runnerup in the 106 class last year. At regionals this year, he earned a second consecutive regional title, this time in the 113-pound weight class, with a 9-2 decision in the championship match. He had a 28-2 record on the season.

As a freshman, it was Lucy Clarno’s first trip to state. At regionals, she recorded a fall less than two minutes into her bronze medal match to finish third in the 120 weight class. Her 40 victories on the season rank second in the school record books.

Senior Cole Sides also finished atop the regional standings by taking first in the 126 weight class. He was 33-1 on the season. This was his third state appearance.

In the 175 weight class, junior Caleb Collins captured the final qualifying spot at regionals to advance to his first state tournament. The varsity newcomer entered the state competition with a 25-14 record.

As a team, the boys finished third at regionals with 108.5 points behind San Antonio Johnson (153.5) and Austin Vandegrift (151.5) while the girls placed ninth.
