On Jan. 18, the DSHS Competition Cheer Team competed at the UIL State Spirit Championships at the Fort Worth Convention Center. The UIL State Spirit Championships is a Game Day Cheer competition where athletes perform a crowd leading band chant, situational sideline routine, cheer, and fight song.

The format of this competition consists of a prelims performance for all teams and advancement to State Finals for the top 20 teams in each division. For the third year in a row, the DSHS Competition Cheer Team made State Finals, earning their highest placement of 13 out of a total of 75 teams in the 6A-DII Division.

“The team started practicing this routine in August, so to be able to finally see months of hard work pay off was well deserved,” Head Coach Brenna Watson said.

The team concluded their competitive cheer season on Jan. 26 at the NCA High School Nationals. They placed 31st in the nation in the Varsity Large Gameday division.

“It was great com-peting in a big arena, doing the thing I love, and putting my heart and soul into it,” sophomore Lila Heinz said. “We worked really well together and were very loud!”

The DSHS Cheer boosters congratulated the team in a Facebook post.

“We saw a lot of amazing teams and were honored to be cheering on the same stage. It was bittersweet to watch our precious seniors perform for the last time and lots of happy tears were shed.”
