Sheriff Cutler, Chief Davenport celebrate retirement

Hays County Sheriff Gary Cutler and Chief Mike Davenport were honored Thursday afternoon during a retirement celebration hosted by the Hays County Sheriff ’s Office.

Cutler, who has served as the county’s top law enforcement official since his election in November 2010, retires with over 50 years of experience in law enforcement. Under his leadership, the Hays County Sheriff ’s Office grew to employ approximately 500 civilian and commissioned staff.

A graduate of Sam Houston State University with a degree in criminal justice, Cutler began his career in 1974 with the Travis County Sheriff ’s Office. Over 26 years there, he rose to the rank of captain, overseeing key areas such as criminal investigations, narcotics, SWAT and evidence manage- ment. After retiring from Travis County in 2000, he served as a lieutenant in Williamson County and later as an investigator for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. He was elected as Hays County Sheriff in 2010.

Chief Mike Davenport, who retires after more than 30 years with the Hays County Sheriff ’s Office, was also recognized during the ceremony. Davenport began his career working in the county jail and rose through the ranks to become Chief of the Sheriff ’s Office.
