The County Commissioners Court issued a proclamation recognizing Dec. 10 as Human Rights Day. The proclamation was initiated by the Hays County Freethinkers Association in recognition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that captured a remarkable act of collective hope 76 years ago.

Drafted by a committee representing different regions, faiths and philosophies and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, the rights enumerated in the declaration are universal and enduring. On Human Rights Day and during Human Rights Week, people reaffirm the commitment to upholding the equal and inalienable rights of all people.

A public reading of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights sponsored by the Hill Country Freethinkers Association will occur at 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 on the south steps of Hays County’s Historic Courthouse.
