Commissioners finalize contract with Austin Pets Alive! For Pet Resource Center

The Hays County Commissioners Court finalized the terms of the contract awarded to Austin Pets Alive!, a leading animal welfare organization, to continue their work for the Hays County Pet Resource, Education, and Research Center. In July 2024, the court awarded the contract to APA!, and has been in negotiations to identify specific community programs while sustaining the significant work made thus far.

'Working together with APA!, we're making strides towards creating a compassionate and supportive environment for the pets and residents of Hays County. The recently approved contract is a testament to our commitment to fostering a community where our furry friends can thrive alongside their human companions,' Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra said.

The Hays PRC provides pet owners with essential resources to help keep pets out of the shelter system, and has supported over 900 families since the launch of the virtual resource center in January. In partnership with Central Texas Food Bank, Hays PRC has also provided food and supplies to over 1,100 pets in need this year.

“By cultivating strong partnerships, we are forging a path towards innovative animal welfare solutions. Our collaborative efforts will ensure that we establish best practices, provide essential services, and foster a safer, more nurturing environment for our community's beloved animals,” Alex Villalobos, Hays County Chief of Staff, said.

The new contract outlined by the Hays County Commissioners Court ensures that APA! will lead these programs for the Hays County community, and implement a new lost and found initiative to support reuniting pets with their families.

'Lost and found pet programs strengthen our communities by encouraging cooperation among neighbors, and are essential to getting pets back home with the families who care for them,' said Lee Ann Shenefiel, Hays County Pet Resource Center Director and Austin Pets Alive! Executive Advisor. 'With these programs, we can continue to support pet owners and strengthen the human- animal bond.”

The Hays County Pet Resource, Education and Research Center, launched in April 2023, is a first-of-itskind model for animal welfare programs across the nation. This partnership between Hays County and Austin Pets Alive! focuses on public safety, animal safety and lifesaving initiatives while increasing public access to important resources for pet owners.
