At the October 18 game against Lake Travis, the 1970 District 29A Dripping Springs Tigers will be honored in ceremonies at midfield beginning at 7:00 p.m. The usual 50year anniversary reunion was postponed by Covid-19, so this represents the 54th year reunion.
The 1970 team was a record-breaking squad. The 26 lettermen carved out a 9-1 regular season record which was the most regular season wins for any previous Tiger eleven-man football team. This 9-1 record stood the test of time until the 2008 and 2016 teams tied it and the 2021 team had a perfect 10-0 record.
Seven members are no longer with us. Expected to attend the ceremony are Cole Bonnett, Howard Bryant, Teddy Draper, Kevin Farrell, Bill Garnett, Terry Garnett, Monte Glosson, James “Sandy” Hall, Pat Lyle, Robert Mauck, Cecil McIntyre, John “Meatball” Murray, Ray Nevarez, Joe Ramirez, Billy Simpson (trainer), Randy Spence, Joe Williamson, Ronnie Wright.
There were some very good athletes on this team that set other standards with a high bar. Besides the usual All-District and All-Centex honors that come with good teams, Pat Lyle was named a unanimous First Team All-State middle guard and Joe Williamson earned Third Team All State offensive end. In addition, John Murray was the first running back in Dripping Springs history to rush for 1000 yards (1,395).
The season's stats can be found on the DSISD athletic website under the title Athletic Records. Wayne Grohman, the defensive coordinator and basketball coach will be unable to attend but also coached the 70-71 team to a district championship as well.
After the ceremonies, the honorees and their families will be seated in the east side north end zone bleachers. Friends and others are invited to drop by and join in on the visiting and reminiscing.
