Taxpayers who requested an extension to file their 2023 federal income tax return are reminded by the IRS that the deadline to file is Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Returns filed after that date may incur late-filing penalties. The IRS also encourages taxpayers to file electronically.
It's important to note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Those who owe taxes should pay as much as possible to minimize interest and penalties. Taxpayers who have not yet filed or paid their 2023 tax return and did not request an extension are urged to file and pay any taxes owed as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and interest.
Additional time for certain groups
Taxpayers in federally declared disaster areas, as well as certain military service members and eligible support personnel in combat zones, may qualify for extended deadlines. Service members and their families should consult their tax advisor or visit irs.gov for more information on these exceptions.
