A group of Dripping Springs moms, who discovered the joy and benefits of pickleball, through their own play, have teamed up with Camp David Retreat to start a Kids’ Pickleball Camp, beginning August 20. The sixweek program, taking place every Tuesday from 6-7 p.m., offers children an opportunity to learn the basics of pickleball in a fun and supportive environment.
The idea for a pickleball camp came to Jennifer Terry, a mother of five, who wanted a less expensive option or her kids to learn the sport. She works at Camp David Retreat and lives nearby. She asked the venue’s owner, David Jones, if she could hold a camp on his two pickleball courts. Since the courts are underutilized during the week, Jones agreed, hoping to encourage kids to learn a new sport.
Terry's goal was to get her own kids unplugged from the ipads and phone screens and outside for some fun and physical activity. She reached out to her friends and fellow pickleball enthusiasts Hope Boatright and Angie Parkhouse to organize the camp.
“Because of David’s generous offer to use his courts, we are able to offer the entire camp for just $150. Private lessons in Dripping Springs can cost up to $90 per hour, and renting a court costs up to $45 per hour, so this is a more affordable family option,” Terry said.
The camp will be taught by Angie Parkhouse, who has been playing pickleball for four years and plays at the local YMCA. “Pickleball is a fantastic way to boost mental health and wellness,” Parkhouse said. “It’s not just a game; it’s a way to bring kids back to real-life fun that lasts a lifetime. I’m excited to teach kids a sport that helps them escape the digital world and discover endless excitement on the court.”
Pickleball is quickly becoming one of America’s favorite sports, known for its accessibility and social nature. Camp David’s Kids’ Pickleball Camp aims to introduce children to this exciting sport in a relaxed atmosphere, fostering a love for physical activity and community. “We’re thrilled to offer this unique opportunity for kids in our community to learn pickleball,” said Jennifer Terry, Camp David’s program coordinator. “It’s a fun, cost-effective way for children to stay active, make new friends, and enjoy the summer.”
The camp is designed to give children an introduction to the sport by explaining the basic equipment, rules, and etiquette. Young pickleballers will learn how to serve, rally, and play before moving on to more advanced techniques and strategy. Parkhouse wants kids to have fun, build friendships, and develop a new activity that fosters physical exercise and sportsmanship. She also aims to encourage children to see sports as an alternative to video games.
As children develop their skills through drills and practice, they will have the opportunity to test those skills through fun games and an end-ofcamp tournament.
“Our camp is more than just a place to learn a new sport; it’s a community where your child will thrive,” Parkhouse said. Her experience as a college camp counselor earned what she describes as ‘black belt in fun.’ Parkhouse loves working with kids and connecting them with sports and this is perfect opportunity to share that passion.
Parkhouse recommends the sport for children because it teaches courtesy, inclusion, and camaraderie. “You don’t need to be a superstar athlete; you just need a smile and a willingness to have fun. Plus, it’s super social, so you make tons of new friends,” she said.
Parents are asked to ensure their children bring a racket, water bottle, and towel to each session. The cost for the camp is $150 per student, which includes the reservation of the pickleball court, instructor fees, and a Camp David Pickle Kid uniform Tshirt. Payments can be made via Venmo on or before the first class on August 20.
