County Updates

County updating floodplain maps, seeking public input

Hays County, in collaboration with the Texas Water Development Board, is conducting a hydraulic study to better understand water flow from the Onion Creek Watershed.

The study will also help update existing floodplain maps, which are based on updated Atlas 14 rainfall data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This, in turn, is expected to help the county determine what areas would be impacted by 100-year and 500-year storm events. Updated floodplain maps can reflect a more accurate risk of flooding to property owners and help guide development. This study will also identify conceptual flood mitigation alternatives for areas with repetitive flood damage.

The county is hosting a public meeting from 4–7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, at the Driftwood Community Center, located at 15112 W RR 150, to share more information on the study and seek input from community members within the study area. Public meeting materials and comment opportunities will also be available online at hayscountytx.com/ onioncreek-watershed-hydraulic- study beginning Thursday, Sept. 14.

The county has encouraged the public to participate and share feedback by Thursday, Sept. 28. Comments may be submitted through the website, at the public meeting, by email at jmolina@cdandp. com or by mail to PO Box 5459, Austin, TX 78763.
