It is an unusual situation for any sport to begin with a district game but that is exactly what happened to the Dripping Springs softball team. The number of teams dictate this. The Lady Tigers return seven starters, including their top two pitchers from a district championship team. Even though they had five scrimmages under their belts, the start was not as smooth as one might expect. On this cold and windy night, DS struggled to a 5-3 win over Hays Johnson. No matter it is a district win and the sharpness will come.
Ace Jordan Cox took the mound and promptly struck out the first two in a 1,2,3 inning. How ever, being only one week out of basketball was not enough to master the control button. In the second she walked a pair that resulted in one run. The third was a little bit of everything. Cox walked the leadoff, had a couple wild pitches, plus three hits and two runs to find themselves behind 3-0. DS took advantage of a walk, two errors and a hit by Taylor Anderson to cross the plate three times and tie the score after three.
After Cox walked the leadoff batter to start the fourth, Coach Womack inserted his other ace, Haiden Anderson, and she shut the Lady Jaguars out with one hit. Mean while, the Lady Tigers were at work scoring. Haley Kanetzky led off with a walk and scored on a twoout double by T. Anderson. This was the fourth. Cox would blast a double in the fifth and cross the plate on a groundout for the final run.
Others contributing runs were Erika Kanetzky, H. Anderson and Isabella Martinez. Getting the other two hits were T. Anderson and H. Kanetzky. Cox tossed three innings, walking four and striking out five. H. Anderson threw four innings walking one, striking out four and allowing two hits for the win.
The Lady Tigers were entered in a tourney last weekend to get more games under their belts and then traveled to play the next district game with NB Canyon on Tuesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, DS will host the Tuck Memorial Tourney honoring Coach Keith Tuck and his daughter, Brittany. It is one of the stronger tournaments around and there will be plenty of highly competitive games going on all day each day.
Dripping Springs will play their games at 5:00 & 7:00 each day and their opponents, in order, will be San Antonio Judson, Lucas Lovejoy, Fredericksburg, Cedar Park, Boerne and Georgetown.
