High school track, field athletes finish top 10 at UIL state competition

Three Dripping Springs High School track and field athletes competed at the University Interscholastic League’s 6A State Meet this past weekend.

Three Dripping Springs High School track and field athletes competed at the University Interscholastic League’s 6A State Meet this past weekend.

The competition took place at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin on Saturday, May 13. Competing athletes included senior Ava Williamson, senior Sophia Farris and junior Tomsen Vickery, each of which finished second in their respective events at the Region IV-6A Meet on April 28–29 in San Antonio.

On the track, senior Sophia Farris advanced to state in the 300-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 42.29, lowering her previous record by .67 seconds. She came in fifth place on Saturday.

Williamson advanced to the state competition for the second consecutive year after clearing five feet four inches in the high jump. She finished in ninth place at state this year.

In the discus, Vickery set a school record with a throw of 181 feet three inches on his final attempt to qualify for the state meet for the first time. He also finished ninth at last weekend’s competition.
