A resident at Ledgestone — a senior living community in the Dripping Springs area — turned 102 last month, celebrating her long life with a community birthday party.
Sue Rummel observed her birthday on April 8 with cake, friends and live music, serenading her with the songs of Sinatra. Growing up in the Greater Austin area, Rummel was born in Leander in 1921. Coming out of high school, she initially became a teacher.
“Back in those days, you didn’t need a degree to become a teacher,” she explained.
However, Sue did eventually obtain a degree in dietetics from the University of Texas. She also spent a large amount of her adult life traveling, having been to Germany and many other parts of Europe.
Rummel said she thinks the advancement of technology has been, “Unbelievable. A miracle, really!” But she has to say that, “being a Texan,” the greatest technology so far has been the air conditioner.
Now, Sue spends her days at Ledgestone. She likes playing bridge and reading, but it has become difficult. “I’m 102 after all!” she shared with a smile.
She continues to enjoy watching movies and doing crossword puzzles and occasionally visits with her niece, who lives nearby.
