Games like the baseball matchup between Dripping Springs and Westlake HIgh Schools are why people play the game.
So many sporting events have strong, predicted outcomes before the games are even played, but many have a way of not turning out as expected. That was the situation the Tigers found themselves in against Westlake. At the time the Chaps were 23-2, 7-0 and ranked number-one in Texas. It did not look good for a Tiger win.
But surprise, surprise — not only did the Tigers upset the Chaps 2-1 but also threw a no-hitter at them.
DSHS had their scoring inning in the third. Ryland Mahoney started the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second. Taylor Tracey walked. Theo Howard grounded out moving runners up. Mason Ashlock singled to drive in the two runs.
Westlake had their big chance in the fourth as two walks and an error allowed one run with one out. Another walk loaded the bases, bringing Tracey in to strike out the next two — the only real threats of the night. Ashlock added a double, and Gavin Hoel singled for the other hits.
Tiger pitchers: Cooper Rummel: 4.1IP, 0H, 1R, 5W, 6K. Tracey: 2.1 IP, 3W, 5K. Jaxon Conover had the final out.
The Tigers, 11-112, 5-4, were rained out for the second Westlake game.
