Lady Tigers finish long season

The season has not been kind to the Lady Tigers basketball team as they could not improve their firepower. They would finish the season with a 9-26 record and 4-12 in district. As we have mentioned before they had at least a half dozen games theirs to win. Despite giving the effort, it just did not culminate in consistent play for a complete game. With the move up to 6A next year, it is obvious the Lady Tigers will have to be willing to take a monumental step up in skill development to have the season they will need to compete. Basketball is one of those sports that you do not have to spend a fortune on to become good. Only time. Get your hands on a ball, find a gym, a park court or a driveway with a goal and spend hours practicing good fundamental skills in all phases of the game. Ballhandling, rebounding and accurate shooting. In the day those individuals were called “gym rats.”

The last two games were indicative of how the Lady Tigers were close. They lost to Seguin 45-38, the fourth seed, and Kerrville Tivy 39-19, the second seed. These were top seeds and yet DS stayed with them for most of the game. Yet, they were getting the same result with teams they were better than. Inability to play a complete game.

Seguin proved the point. The Lady Tigers trailed 8-4 after one and gave up two more 22-16 at the half. A good third put them in the right spot to make a final move with the score 33-31. Unfortunately, they just could not continue the effort to fruition.

Kerrville modeled the type of play the Lady Tigers will need to improve to. They were aggressive in every phase of the game. Strong defense, going for rebounds and loose balls as if they were hundreddollar bills. Fundamental form in shooting and worked the paint very hard, including the jump shot and layups. Again DS stayed within range until the half and mostly because Tivy was a little off in their shooting. It was 6-9 after one and 11-15 at half. Points really came hard as Tivy stretched the lead. It was 17-27 after three.

It was senior night as seven and their parents were honored prior to the game. They were Paige Sitterle, Ava Warren, Karenna Edwards, Brynn Fields, Madelyn Robles, Ainsley Ballard and Ella Smith. The leadership for next season will have to come from the returners Hayden Ely, Makynna Hubbard, Kiera O'Connor, Jordan Cox, Linan Scott, Azaria Arnold, Anna Rhode and Caroline Dill.

Final district standings: NB Canyon 15-1, Kerrville 14-2, Boerne Champion 13-3, Seguin 9-7, Hays Johnson 7-9, Veterans Memorial 6-10, DS 4-12, Alamo Heights 3-13, Lehman 0-16.

Vs Seguin: Hubbard 7, Dill 6, Ely 5, O'Connor 4, Scott 4, Smith 4, Edwards 2, Cox 2, Arnold 2, Robles 2.

Vs Tivy: Cox 4, Dill 4, Hubbard 2, Scott 2, Arnold 2, Ballard 2, Smith 2, Robles 1.
