Anytime the season is nearing an end and goals have not been met, it can be hard for teams to continue playing hard to the very end. Based on recent performance, this is not the case with the Dripping Springs High School girls basketball team — a testament to the quality of its players and coaching staff.
After a tough loss to Bowie High School, the Lady Tigers bore down and took on natural rival Johnson High School. Back in the day before consolidation, Dripping Springs battled Buda ISD in all its sports. So, it is expected that one plays those games as if they are for championships.
It was a determined effort throughout the game. After one quarter, Johnson held a 13-7 lead. The Lady Tigers battled back and tied the game at 19 for the half. Dripping Springs continued their effort and held a 31-28 advantage after the third quarter. The fourth was a scramble that ended in a 46-46 tie and on to overtime.
Coach Jordan Batson lamented how a shot was counted as a two-pointer when film showed it to be a three and that would have ended up being a win for the Lady Tigers. Overtime went poorly after an early three-pointer, and the result was a 5153 loss.
Undaunted, the Lady Tigers hosted Austin’s Akins High School, and the outstanding effort was still there. Dripping Springs continued to get scoring help from all areas, and the Lady Tigers seemed unafraid to put up a shot when they had it. After one quarter, it was a 14-7 lead. From that point, the Lady Tigers continued to explode and pushed the lead to 36-7. The pressure stayed on as Dripping Springs cruised in the third 47-17 before putting the pedal to the medal and finishing off the game 65-21.
